  1.       HyperShell Release 5.0 - October 1993

  4.       HyperShell is a system for the preparation and presentation of a
  5.       wide range of applications. It is built around a hypertext
  6.       structure with a comprehensive and powerful scripting language,
  7.       and is capable of use for most hypertext oriented systems and for
  8.       many application areas not normally associated with hypertext.
  9.  
  10.       The HyperShell viewing program includes the following features:-

  12.       * Text frame based system with highlighted references
  13.       * Navigation to frames in the same or another file
  14.       * Backtracking and history list
  15.       * Bookmarking of frames and references for later recall
  16.       * Popup notes, menus, dialogue boxes and messages
  17.       * Expansion references and conditional text
  18.       * Contents lists including selective lists
  19.       * Title searches and full text searches
  20.       * DOS browsing and management facilities
  21.       * Text file browser
  22.       * Scripting language with variables, macros and control structures
  23.       * Formfill input fields
  24.       * Three types of program execution with swapping to extra memory
  25.       * Supporting files can be accessed in compressed form
  26.       * Full screen graphic images (BLOAD, PCX) with selection zones

  28.       The graphic version of the HyperShell program also provides:-

  63.       HyperShell  has  been  designed  to  be  fast, small, and powerful,
  64.       supporting files larger than available memory  whilst  occupying  a
  65.       fixed  amount  of  memory itself (128k currently) so that it can be
  66.       used for controlling other applications. It is designed to  run  on
  67.       the  widest  range of equipment, whilst taking advantage of the
  68.       facilities offered by the more powerful machines. The system   is
  69.       very  configurable,  including  colour  schemes,  key mappings,
  70.       all text strings, control menu and presentation 'look and feel'.
  71.       Most of the supporting files, apart from graphic images etc, are
  72.       of textual content, permitting easy production and maintenance
  73.       using existing tools. Graphic facilities provide ready import
  74.       capability from the most common graphic formats of PCX, BMP and
  75.       GIF, whilst full screen displays of .PCX files are possible.

  77.       Documentation includes a full authoring guide and a quick reference
  78.       guide.  Also there is a reference guide in hypertext format.

  80.       THE EVALUATION SYSTEM
  81.       =====================
  82.  
  83.       The full HyperShell system comes on two full 1.44mb disks, and
  84.       occupies over 5mb withh all options installed. It is not practical
  85.       to distribute the full system as shareware, as no-one would be
  86.       willing to pay the cost of obtaining the disks or downloading the
  87.       system, so a selection of material from the full system is
  88.       provided.  The evaluation system contains many of the main
  89.       programs, along with demonstrations, examples, and sufficient
  90.       documentation to allow you to see what HyperShell is capable of.
  91.  
  92.       To install the system, unzip all the archives into a new directory
  93.       on your hard disk.
  94.  
  95.       Before  you run the demonstrations, you must check that the COMSPEC
  96.       environment variable points to a  location  where  the  COMMAND.COM
  97.       program  is  held, and the PATH environment variable must be set up
  98.       to include the drive/directory containing  the  programs,  for  the
  99.       HOME  hyperfile  and the DOS EXIT to work, but are not essential to
  100.       try out HS against a hyperfile directly.

  102.       You should then adjust the contrast on your monitor to show
  103.       colours or intensity levels correctly, and type :-
  104.

  107.       This will present a menu of options.  To  start  with,  select  the
  108.       Introduction   option   to   display  the  HyperShell  introductory
  109.       hyperfile to get you started on how to use  HyperShell.  Hyperfiles
  110.       with an extension of .HYP can be run using the command
  111.  
  112.         HS filename
  113.  
  114.       Some of the examples require extra space to save changes or edits.
  115.       If you are using a floppy system, copy the files to a fresh floppy
  116.       before use.
  117.  
  118.       To run an introduction to editing using the integrated
  119.       environment, run the following. This will enable you to add your
  120.       own material to the EDINTRO hyperfile.

  124.       The version 5 graphics demonstration requires a VGA adaptor, and
  125.       can be run using the command:-
  126.

  129.       If  you  have a Microsoft compatible mouse, the system will use the
  130.       mouse driver directly, otherwise a 'mouse emulation' mode  will  be
  131.       used  whereby  the  cursor  keys are used to position the selection
  132.       cursor, but this will not allow you to use  a  mouse  pointer  with
  133.       graphic displays.

  135.       IMPORTANT:  Some software, such as the GEM desktop environment, may
  136.       leave certain mouse drivers in an antisocial state, such  that  any
  137.       program  attempting  to  use  the  mouse  interface  will  hang the
  138.       computer, requiring a hard reset.  If  this  happens  when  running
  139.       HyperShell,  try  rebooting before running the program, and if this
  140.       fails, try using the -m command line flag, or  not  installing  the
  141.       mouse driver.

  143.       MONOCHROME MONITORS ON EGA / VGA:  On a VGA system, switch the  VGA
  144.       card into colour mode to take advantage of the grey scale outputs.
  145.       On a mono EGA system, you will experience problems with certain
  146.       colour schemes - it is suggested that you run the system with the
  147.       following command format:-

  151.       THE DOCUMENTATION
  152.       -----------------
  153.  
  154.       The evaluation system comes with some documentation to allow you
  155.       to create your own simple applications. The documentation files
  156.       are as follows:-
  157.  
  158.       The file BEGINNER.DOC is a document which gives some initial
  159.       guidelines to creating your own material. You should read this
  160.       before trying to produce your own files.
  161.  
  162.       HSREF.HYP is a full hypertext reference document for HyperShell,
  163.       giving details of the hyperfile structure. To use this, type:-
  164.

  167.       The QREF.DOC document provides a quick reference to the hyperfile
  168.       syntax and commands, and is useful in printed format. It also
  169.       contains the command line formats for the main programs supplied
  170.       with HyperShell.  The TUTOR.DOC file is a chapter from the version
  171.       4 documentation which may be used as a tutorial on the basics of
  172.       the HyperShell file format and scriptin language. To read these
  173.       files, use the HTYPE command. For example to read the quick
  174.       reference guide:-

  178.       The full HyperShell documentation is provided on registration, and
  179.       runs to over 200 typeset pages.

  181.       SHAREWARE DETAILS

  186.       The HyperShell system, including supporting utilities, is a
  187.       shareware product.  This means the following:-

  192.       HyperShell  IS  NOT  FREE. It is a commercial product for which you
  193.       must pay if you are to use it, and  is  subject  to  the  copyright
  194.       laws.

  196.       You  are  encouraged  to  make  copies  of the HyperShell shareware
  197.       distribution, without any alterations to the files in it, and  give
  198.       these  to  others  for  evaluation.  This  READ.ME file must not be
  199.       altered and must accompany all copies. The system  may  be  offered
  200.       for   download   via  Bulletin  Boards,  and  may  be  offered  for
  201.       distribution by shareware distributors, provided unduly high  rates
  202.       are not charged for such distribution.

  204.       You are permitted to make unlimited use of  the  HyperShell  reader
  205.       program  (HS.EXE)  with  any  hyperfiles  supplied  to you, without
  206.       further registration, provided you do  not  alter  the  content  of
  207.       these  files.

  209.       You  are  permitted  to  evaluate the system for producing your own
  210.       hyperfiles for a period not exceeding three (3) calendar months. If
  211.       you produce your own  hyperfiles  for  your  own  use  beyond  that
  212.       period,  you are required to pay for a HyperShell personal licence.
  213.       A  personal  licence  allows  one  person  to  use  HyperShell  for
  214.       producing  hyperfiles for his own use and for distribution with the
  215.       reader program (HS.EXE or HL.EXE) WITHOUT CHARGE  to  others,  with
  216.       the exception that where this is done in a commercial environment a
  217.       developers  licence  is  payable  (see  below).   Also the personal
  218.       licence allows the sale of  your  own  material,  with  the  reader
  219.       program  (HS.EXE  or  HL.EXE), AS SHAREWARE over bulletin boards or
  220.       via shareware distribution channels, PROVIDED it is made  clear  to
  221.       the  purchaser that the material must not be altered, AND a copy of
  222.       the material as distributed is  sent  to  Text  Technology  on  the
  223.       understanding  that  unaltered  copies  may  be  sent to interested
  224.       parties or further distributed.

  226.       If you produce hyperfiles for use by others, where a charge is made
  227.       for  the  material  or  for your services in the production of that
  228.       material, you are required to pay for a  developers  licence.  This
  229.       applies  whether  the  material  forms part of a package, or is the
  230.       whole package.  The  developers  licence  entitles  one  person  to
  231.       produce  hyperfiles for any number of 'end' users to read using the
  232.       HS.EXE or HL.EXE reader program, and/or to print using  the  HP.EXE
  233.       formatted  print  program. Note that a licence is required for EACH
  234.       person developing such material.  Site licence terms are  available
  235.       on  request. Corporate licence rates are available if more than one
  236.       person is to produce hyperfiles.   In  certain  cases,  subject  to
  237.       specific  agreement  with Text Technology, applications built using
  238.       the Integrated Environment features may be  distributed  under  the
  239.       developers  licence  at  no  additional  charge.   Text  Technology
  240.       reserves the right to apply a runtime royalty rate in other  cases,
  241.       which is subject to negotiation on a per case basis.

  243.       Under the personal or developers licence terms, you may  provide  a
  244.       copy  of the HyperShell runtime components (HS.EXE, HL.EXE,  HP.EXE
  245.       and HYPOP.EXE) with any material that you distribute to others. You
  246.       must  also  provide  an  acknowledgement, visible on screen  or  in
  247.       printed documentation, indicating that HyperShell has been used and
  248.       giving the name and address of Text Technology.

  250.       If HyperShell is to be used by others within an academic or other
  251.       non profit making establishment, and no charge is to be levied  for
  252.       the  use  of  the  system,  a  reduced rate is applicable, which is
  253.       available on  application.  Also  special  academic  licences   are
  254.       available  for teaching or classwork purposes. If such use is to be
  255.       made in a commercial establishment, the full developers licence  is
  256.       applicable for each person producing material.

  258.       The HyPop program is provided as part of the HyperShell system, but
  259.       may  be  separately  licenced  if  you  just require a simple popup
  260.       hypertext system. The development licence for this is  required  if
  261.       you want to distribute the system with your own software.
  262.  
  263.       If you decide not to register after the evaluation period you  must
  264.       destroy  all  copies  of any hyperfiles which you have used in that
  265.       time. YOU MUST NOT GIVE COPIES OF ANY  HYPERFILES  YOU  PRODUCE  TO
  266.       ANYONE, WITHOUT FIRST OBTAINING A SUITABLE LICENCE.

  268.       THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED 'AS IS' AND TEXT TECHNOLOGY DISCLAIMS ALL
  269.       WARRANTIES  RELATING TO THESE SOFTWARE PRODUCTS, WHETHER EXPRESS OR

  340.       Personal  and  Developers registration for the full system includes
  341.       the latest release  version  together  with  printed  documentation
  342.       and  low  cost  updates  to  this version.  It also includes postal
  343.       support for problems of use and for bug  reports,  until  the  next
  344.       major  version  release.   Telephone  support  is only available at
  345.       certain times.  We do  not  provide  a  'hotline'  service,  but  a
  346.       reasonable  attempt  will  be  made  to  answer problems as soon as
  347.       possible.

  349.       Registration  is  a  one  off  charge,  and  entitles  you  to  use
  350.       HyperShell under the terms of your licence for as long as you like.

  352.       Additional  support,  for  instance in the design and production of
  353.       hyperfiles, is chargeable on a time and materials basis at mutually
  354.       agreed rates.

  356.       Custom modifications will  be  charged  on  a  sliding  scale  from
  357.       nothing  for  a  generally  useful  feature  up  to  full  time and
  358.       expenses for a special purpose modification.

  360.       Payment by cheque or  postal order in pounds sterling is preferred.
  361.       Payment in a currency other than pounds sterling  should  have  the
  362.       equivalent  of  6  pounds added to cover currency conversion costs.
  363.       We  can  also  accept orders by post or telephone on certain credit
  364.       cards (Access, Visa, Mastercard,  Eurocard)  subject  to  the usual
  365.       rules,  and if you  wish to order this way please state the type of
  366.       card,  the  card  number  and  the expiry date,  as well as a phone
  367.       number where you can be contacted.  Credit card sales are in pounds
  368.       sterling (this will be handled automatically).
